My goal this month was to make a purple whole cloth bedspread/quilt for my daughter. As of the 19th, I hadn't even started yet. Also on the 19th, a positive Covid test. I've never had it before. 😫 I figured there was no hope at all for completing this project.
By Saturday I was so bored I decided to tackle ironing the 20 yards of washed fabric. I used Confetti Cottons in Unicorn and Iris. I'm glad I washed this because after washing the fabric was 42" wide from selvedge edge to edge for the Unicorn and 41" wide for the Iris. It was 44" prior to washing. I decided to make the bedspread 90" wide and 106" long. Note I'm saying bedspread because she decided she wanted it long enough to do a pillow fold rather than separate shams. This dimension allowed for up to 3% additional shrinkage of the Quilters Dream Cotton Deluxe batting after washing and drying the quilt. I didn't consider the shrinkage due to the quilting, but I figured 3% was generous and should cover any scenario. Her original quilt was 87" x 87" after 20 years of washing and usage. (It had shams as well.)
Okay, back to the quilting. I didn't take any pictures of actually assembling the pieces. I just cut three widths at 90" each for the top and 96" cuts for the back, seamed them at 1.5" with a 2.0 stitch length with selvedges still on, then trimmed off the excess in the seam, leaving a 1/2" allowance. I left the back as-is and trimmed the front to my target length of 106". I had 2.5 yards of the Unicorn left and 2 yards, 5" of the Iris after making the cuts, so it appears that while I lost some width, I didn't lose length after the washing.
For quilting, we decided on the Get in Loser design from Melissa Kelley. The thread is Glide Grape on the bottom and Amethyst on the top. It was a pretty long stitch-out even though I feel like I went with a standard size for the design scale. This first one is true colors.
My full quilt photo color is so far off. I couldn't adjust it to look remotely close to actual.
We debated which color binding to use. I used the darker color simply because I had a better all-purpose thread color match for it (or so I thought). After quilting, the quilt now measures 88" x 102.25". I was a bit shocked that I lost 2" of width just from quilting. I haven't completely finished yet since I was feeling tired by late Monday afternoon and I still had to make a trip into town to deliver my son's car to him. But I'll get the binding completed for sure before the end of the month and then I'll update the post with a final picture or two.
