Sew Together Bag and Ancestry Update

Over the weekend I got together with some of my sewing friends and we all made Sew Demented's Sew Together Bag.  This one is not for the faint of heart!  It took me most of the day to sew it.  It was hard for me to picture what the finished bag would look like, so it took me a while to choose my fabrics.  Even then it didn't look quite how I thought it would.  I'm pretty happy with it though. I'll probably try this pattern again and will use the Quilt Barn's online step by step photo tutorial since there are no photos in the pattern.  I may also try the mini version of the bag from Occasional Piece.  Links to all extra tutorials are on my Pinterest Tutorials board.
I chose a lightweight chambray for the outside and ended up quilting it with a  contrasting thread.
Opened up.
Here are the pockets all opened.  I accidentally had one zipper going the wrong way.
At least it was the one in the middle.  I tried to make it look like a deliberate design choice!
I added in the tabs at the end of the zippers as suggested on Crazy Mom Quilts' blog.
I included the optional pin cushion, but I'm not entirely happy with it.

Now I just need to stuff it full of sewing notions!

In other news, I've been researching my family tree a little more since getting my DNA results back.  If you recall from my May 11 post, I was quite disappointed with the tiny amount of information I received, especially since the TV ads make it seem like you'll get a country percentage breakdown.  Come to find out that the company selling the special on Groupon is Ancestry By DNA, not Ancestry DNA from Ancestry.com.  Ancestry.com's DNA test does indeed tell you the country percentages, although you may need to buy a subscription to their website to see all the results.  This other company has made their site look as though it's run by Ancestry.com with a similar font and logo.  I'm disappointed that we didn't pick up on the difference at the time of purchase, and I'm pretty disgusted this By company is clearly trying to steal customers and provide a bare minimum of information at a steep price.  I'm SO glad I only paid $39 for this minimal information.  I may try the Ancestry.com one just to see how they compare and also get the country info I was originally looking for.  Buyer beware, I guess.

  1. We got the real one and I totally love it.. We didn't have anything posted online about our family tree when we took the test and when we got the results I was connected to my family..even tho everything is under my hubbys name and nothing under my maiden name. I was told that from 2 sides on my grandmothers side I had Indian in me and I wanted to see what kind.. Come to find out I have none.. but also I can't seem to link to my grandfathers side..so I am thinking there was some hanky panky going on. It is so fun to discover this.
